Editorial Standards & Methodology

How we research, verify, and publish information about fire protection companies, NFPA compliance, and industry news — and how we keep editorial decisions independent.

Our Mission

FireProtectionFinder.com exists to make it easier for building owners, facility managers, and property professionals to find licensed fire protection inspection companies, understand their compliance obligations under NFPA standards, and stay current on changes that affect their buildings. We focus on accuracy, primary-source citations, and transparency about how our directory and content are produced.

How We Research and Write Content

Every news article, compliance guide, and service explainer published on FireProtectionFinder is researched from primary sources. Our typical sources include:

  • NFPA standards (NFPA 25, 72, 10, 96, 101, 75, 855, and others) — the authoritative codes that govern fire protection design, installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance in the United States
  • State fire marshal websites and license registries — for jurisdictional requirements, contractor licensing rules, and local amendments to NFPA codes
  • Government data sources — including NFIRS (National Fire Incident Reporting System), CMS Life Safety Code references, and state-level compliance reports
  • Industry publications — NFPA Journal, Fire Engineering, FM Magazine, ASHE (American Society for Health Care Engineering), and similar peer-reviewed industry sources
  • Recent news coverage — for incident reporting, we cite established news outlets and link to original reporting

Every claim of fact in our content is intended to link to a primary or authoritative source. When you read an article, the cited links at the bottom of the page show exactly where each piece of information came from.

How We Build the Directory

Provider listings on FireProtectionFinder are sourced from:

  • Google Places API — for business name, address, phone number, website, Google ratings, and Google review counts
  • Provider self-claims — once a provider claims their listing, they can update services offered, service areas, company size, business description, and other details
  • State license registries (where publicly available) — for contractor license verification

We do not fabricate listings. Every provider in our directory corresponds to a real business with a verifiable Google Places presence or a submitted self-claim.

Editorial Independence

FireProtectionFinder is currently free for both customers (requesting quotes) and providers (claiming and maintaining their listings). Regardless of how our business model evolves, the following editorial principles apply:

  • News articles are not sponsored. We do not accept payment to write, modify, or remove news content. If we ever publish sponsored content in the future, it will be clearly labeled as such.
  • Reviews and ratings are not for sale. Provider ratings shown on FireProtectionFinder are sourced from independent third parties (currently Google Maps). We do not write fake reviews and do not remove legitimate negative reviews on request.
  • Compliance and educational content has no advertiser influence. NFPA standard explanations, AHJ jurisdiction details, and inspection-frequency guides are researched from primary sources. Authors do not have undisclosed financial relationships with providers featured in the same article.
  • If a paid tier is introduced, paid features (such as featured placement or premium presentation) will be clearly labeled. The ordering of providers within a given tier — paid or free — is determined by merit signals (Google rating, customer response time, license verification status, NICET certifications), never by additional payment.

Corrections Policy

We make mistakes. When we do, we correct them quickly and transparently. If you find an error in any article, compliance page, or directory listing, please email corrections@fireprotectionfinder.com with the URL of the page and a description of the error. We aim to respond to every correction request within 48 hours.

When we correct a published article, we update the "Last reviewed" date at the top of the article and, for substantive corrections, add a brief note explaining what changed.

Provider Listing Disputes

If you are a fire protection company and believe your listing contains incorrect information, you can:

We comply with reasonable removal requests for businesses that are no longer operating, and we work in good faith to resolve any disagreement about factual details on a listing.

Who We Are

FireProtectionFinder is operated as an independent directory. We are not affiliated with NFPA, any specific fire protection company, any insurance carrier, or any government agency. Our editorial team researches and publishes content from public sources; we do not claim to be licensed fire protection contractors ourselves. For specific compliance questions about your building, please consult your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and a licensed contractor — our content is informational, not a substitute for professional advice.
